Liturgical
Acolytes
Acolyting at St. James offers young people (ages 8-18) the
opportunity to serve their Parish community, learn first-hand
about the traditions of Episcopal Worship, and have fun
together. Levels of service vary depending on age and
experience. Training is provided twice during the year to
welcome new acolytes and to increase responsibilities for
seasoned acolytes.
Altar Guild
The Altar Guild helps create a sacred, orderly space for
worship. There is a regular worship schedule as well as the holy
days and the great festivals of the church such as Christmas and
Easter. Preparations for weddings, funerals, and baptisms are
also the Guild's responsibility. The Altar Guild assists at each
Eucharist by preparing the altar with the elements of worship.
They maintain the linens, communion silver, candles, and
vestments. The vestments and many of the elements are set out
according to Liturgical seasons. They also preserve the
beautiful vestments that have matching frontals and other
hangings that adorn the sanctuary and chancel. Altar Guild
members do this ministry in thanksgiving for all they have
received in their own lives. They love the work that is given to
them and feel there is no greater privilege for a layperson in
the church than to serve Christ in this way. Participation is on
a rotational basis and new members are warmly welcomed into this
very responsible, spiritual, and nurturing ministry.

Chalice Bearers and Lectors
Our Chalice Bearers and Lectors are parishioners dedicated to
St. James by-the-Sea who faithfully participate in our Sunday
services and special occasions. Chalice Bearers and Lectors
participate by reading lessons, leading prayers and assisting at
the Lord's Table during Holy Eucharist. Those interested attend
training sessions that are offered for new participants and
occasional refresher courses provided for the entire group.

Flower Guild
The Flower Guild enjoys making arrangements for the Church and
chapel to accentuate the beauty of St. James for Sunday services
and at certain times to acknowledge memorials, weddings, and
other special occasions. The Flower Guild is socially active
within the Church community. We welcome potential members at our
special functions, such as luncheons and flower arranging
demonstrations.

Ushers
Ushers are among the first contacts a newcomer makes with St.
James by-the-Sea. This ministry sets an inviting and courteous
environment to all parishioners by providing directions and
information. Ushers also keep track of attendance and ensure
sufficient worship materials are available.
